What Makes the SEL40F25G Special

As a Sony G lens, the build quality is excellent throughout. The 0.25m minimum focusing distance also makes it useful for table-top photography and close-up shots.

At 173g, you can hold it effortlessly with one hand. Combined with the α7C II, the total is just 687g — remarkably light for a full-frame setup.

The lens comes with a distinctive petal-style hood. Uniquely, you don't need to remove or reverse it for shooting — it stays on. I don't use a lens cap at all; I just carry it with the hood on. Not fumbling with a lens cap on location is genuinely convenient.

The rendering wide open has a soft, old-lens quality to it — stop it down and you get a sharper, more clinical result. It's a different character from Sigma's typically aggressive wide-open sharpness.

Used prices around ¥40,000 make it an accessible option.
